From a BBC Programme called Personal Call. Black: Describes surroundings. Introduces Bernard Cousins: 23 years old; has completed 2 of a 3-year B.A. course. Reasons for studying English literature. After two years in army did not want to come to Cambridge: thought, mistakenly, it meant just "studying books". Enjoyed army life: which, like Cambridge, is a maturing experience. Army teaches self-confidence. Cambridge adds toleration, including appreciation of students from other countries. One benefits also from reading the works of great moralists on religious problems. Religious confusion common to youth, but only stage on journey: Cambridge gives opportunity to sort things out. Rowing as sport, and relaxation from study especially from Tripos term tension. A few students break down under strain of study, usually those without safety valve of sport. "Bumps Race" this week: describes. The satisfaction of rowing. Life as a freshman: difference between army and university discipline: latter camouflages orders as requests. Cost of being up at Cambridge.
