Comment
"The Ardja is the Commedia dell'arte of the Balinese. It is a secular theatre, and much more popular than the Gambuh. The performances begin between ten and eleven o'clock in the evening, and usually end with daybreak. The actors, in contrast to the Wajang Topéng, are made up and made up, but do not wear masks. opposes the more natural and expressive voice with replicas in the spoken mode. The accompaniment comprises a single melodic instrument, the small straight flute with headband. The other instruments, in bronze and bamboo, form a flexible and powerful battery which punctuates the lines and episodes of the drama. The dialogues are mostly improvised on a scenario given here, it is a scene from the legend of the raja of Galuh. The troupe recorded is that of Ida Bagus Sudiyasa, in Taman.
