Comment
"The Gamelan Saron, funerary orchestra reserved for the three noble castes: Brahmans, Satrya and Wesya, includes bronze instruments to which is added a saron, eight-tube bamboo xylophone. The association of bronzes and bamboo gives this orchestra a velvety timbre strewn with sparkles, a harmony in halftones, from which emanates a quiet charm, a peaceful melancholy. This orchestra is not widely used: we know of no other, to tell the truth, than this belongs to the village of Sangsi, near Singapadu, in the south of the island; but its musicians are called everywhere to enhance the princely funerals, always celebrated with great pomp. The learned music of Saron is played in the enclosure of the house of the dead. The air, or gending, reproduced here is called GENDING LILIT; it is a theme with eight variations; it is performed during the ritual bath of the deceased."
