The listener should refer to track 4 for a performance of this song. Here, it is sung solely by the female singer, using the 'singing the lute' technique. Thus, the singer sings the instrumental preludes and interludes; she is equally familiar with the sung poem and the accompanying lute part. The sung poem recounts the scholar's journey, from his childhood learning Chinese characters to the literary competitions. If he succeeds, he will become a mandarin; otherwise, a schoolteacher in the village.

L'auditeur se rapportera à la plage 4 pour une exécution de ce chant en situation de performance. Ici, il est chanté uniquement par la chanteuse, avec la méthode 'chanter le luth'. Ainsi, la chanteuse chante les préludes et interludes instrumentaux ; elle connaît aussi bien le poème chanté que la partie du luth qui l'accompagne en situation de performance.
Le poème chanté relate le parcours du lettré, depuis son enfance lorsqu'il apprend les caractères chinois jusqu'aux épreuves de concours littéraires. S'il les réussit, il deviendra mandarin, sinon maître d'école au village.
