(Flores Waiklibang) Goken, Chorus, Agrarian Ritual Helonikat
-
Field recording collected by Dana Rappoport in Eastern Indonesia in 2006 and 2007.
-
Recorded during the sowing ritual (Sikkat), named Helonikat, "in lieu of sowing". Because in fact they have already sown and the rice has already started to grow. The ritual must be done by each land master clan, here Maran and Koten. Here is the ritual of the Koten clan. Responsorial choir: the choir responds to the duet. Goken is an opening and closing song to the origin myth of rice. The lian naman dance begins with this great Goken chant. All men are arranged in a chain. A duo sings and a choir responds in unison "hi ho ha". The dance takes place in front of the Koten clan's motherhouse. The next record is better.
