Broadcast title: Brief excursion: A visit to St. Dunstan's. Excerpt Mr. Walsh, blinded in World War I, interviewed by U.S. Deedes during a visit to St. Dunstan's. BBC summary: Wounded at Ypres in 1917; came to England, in hospital two months, afterwards at St. Dunstan's, Regents Park. Trained in typing, braille, stringwork. Only one band. Afraid of traffic at first. Does instracting himself now. Sir Ian Fraser thought it would encourage blinded of this war if taught by older ones; they can give little tips that a sighted person does not discover. Hobbies? A little bit of thinking. Formed a dance bond, learned to play trumpet though has only three fingers; dominoes, molo, darts, bridge, whist. Explains how they play darts: a strip of wood to give position on floor; they know where numbers are on board and throw for what they went: some of the boys very good, and go all over country giving demonstrations. Never goes out without a stick; gets about all right: you get used to feeling different objects you pass: surface of fence, lamp-post or wall. Knows Brighton very well in this way. 1 disc 2 sides 30 cm 78 rpm mono. Broadcast : BBC Far Eastern Service (London Calling Asia) 1953-06-05 ^A246768
