An ethnologist and historian of the Bugis of South Sulawesi, he first visited Indonesia in 1959. Trained by André Leroi-Gourhan in 1963, he joined the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS) in 1964. Throughout his career, he acquired a vast knowledge of the Insulindian area.
