en Dutch musicologist, violonist, who collected music all over the Indonesian archipelago from 1922 to 1934. He was a pioneer in the study of non-Western music. He did most of his Indonesian research in thirties, while in Indonesia as a colonial civil servant. Back in the Netherlands, he became the curator of the Tropen museum in Amsterdam. He discussed a comparative framework for the study of Western and non-Western music.

Il a effectué la plupart de ses recherches alors qu'il se trouvait en Indonésie en tant que fonctionnaire colonial. De retour aux Pays-Bas, il est devenu conservateur du musée des Tropiques à Amsterdam. Il a proposé un cadre comparatif pour l'étude des musiques occidentales et non occidentales.
