Archivist's Original Title

en Jörai tune “Crying over a deceased elephant” on the köni fiddle
fr Air jörai "Pleurs sur un éléphant défunt" sur la vièle köni

Original description

en Announcement by J. Dournes who explains that the tune played is a typically jörai tune and not a bahnar tune, the köni fiddle is played alone (and not in a köni fiddle-ddông zither ensemble). Unpublished sound recordings of instrumental/vocal melodies and instrumental performances made by Jacques Dournes from 1963 to 1964 in Vietnam with the Jaraï population. VIELE: monochord fiddle "köni"; Playing the "köni" involves that the musician also produces sound with his voice: a string attached to the string of the instrument is held by his mouth. He hums through gritted teeth. Recording: 19cm/s, 1/2 Track B. Poor sound quality. See archive file; Archivist(s):Tran Quang Hai, Aliénor Anisensel.

VIELE: vièle monocorde "köni "; Le jeu du "köni" implique que le musicien produit également des sons avec sa voix: une ficelle fixée à la corde de l'instrument est retenue par sa bouche. Il chantonne les dents serrées. Enreg.: 19cm/s, 1/2 Piste B. Qualités sonores faibles. Cf. DT; Archivist:Tran Quang Hai, Aliénor Anisensel.
